Capital City: Darwin

The Northern Territory is a sparsely populated wilderness that is home to much of Australia's aboriginal population, culture and traditions. Historical sites, rock art painting and community life occur throughout most areas.

The state is mostly undeveloped with Darwin being the only town any significant population. The terrain ranges from the rugged, coastal wetlands of the Top End to the dry, red desert centre where Uluru is the world famous landmark.

The tropical Top End sees only minor temperature changes between summer and winter. Of greater significance is the Wet Season between Nov and April and the Dry Season between May and October. Away from the coast, inland areas can see summer daytime maximums up to 40-42° C with winter nights dropping to 2-3° C.

One factor to be considered with NT travel is, unless you are flying, the popular inland destinations require lengthy travel times. Darwin to Uluru is a 2 day drive. The state is ideally suited for car rental or campervan hire.
