Capital City: Canberra The Australian Capital Territory, or ACT as it is usually referred to, is a small 88 km long and 30 km wide area located approximately 290 km inland from Sydney. It is the site of Canberra, the national capital. Canberra is the political hub of the nation. It is home to some of Australia's finest exhibitions and architecture. Construction dates from 1913, based on a design specifically planned to be the home of federal parliament, the serving politicians and associated staff. Most foreign embassies and consulates are located in Canberra. Large numbers of visitors travel to Canberra to view national treasures such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the Royal Australian Mint, the High Court, National Science and Technology Centre and the National Library. Canberra is an all year round destination. Winter in the ACT is June - Aug summer is Dec - Feb. Canberra experiences some of the coldest winters in Australia with temperatures dropping to - 6° C. Canberra offers: Parliament house, the National Gallery, cultural centres & exhibitions, bushwalking & hiking, cycling, canoeing, skiing the nearby winter snowfields, white water rafting, caving... and see it all from the air in a hot air balloon
