Known as a Great Barrier Reef holiday playground, the Whitsunday Islands are one of the most popular destinations for North Queensland holidays and a renowned location for serious sailors. The major jumping off point for reef excursions is the small town of Airlie Beach which is home for many of the sailing, diving and island shuttle vessels which berth at nearby Shute Harbour. This premier holiday region is home to many of the best known Barrier Reef resorts such as Daydream Island, Hamilton island, Hayman Island, South Molle Island, Brampton Island and South Long Island. All resorts offer a year round season and most are serviced by a shuttle services to and from Airlie Beach. Activities vary between the different resorts according to their locale and type of guest.
