The rolling plains of the Darling Downs form part of south east Queensland, one of the most popular holiday regions in Australia. While much of the appeal of this region lies in the coastal attractions such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Fraser Island, the rural interior has its own unique charm. Historic homesteads and some fine national parks are holiday favourites. Toowoomba is the major town of the Darling Downs and is renowned for the spectacular gardens that attract thousands of visitors in early spring. The Cobb and Co. museum houses historic carriages that were such an integral part of the regional history. The Jondaryan Woolshed tourist complex west of town introduces visitors to aspects of the rural life that is such a significant part of the region. Warwick is the oldest town in Queensland, except for Brisbane. This prosperous little country town has several fine examples of sandstone buildings that date from early settlement. Noted for its fine fruit, vegetables and vineyards, Stanthorpe is Queensland's coldest town, sitting on the elevated Granite Belt. The nearby Girraween National Park is a popular attraction. The Darling Downs towns of Goondiwindi, Dalby and Chinchilla are small country towns that service the surrounding rural communities.
