Cairns is the major holiday centre of Queensland's tropical north region. It is the jumping off point for most travel and tours in this area. The town is renowned for it's reef dive trips, cruising and sailing. The fringe reefs around Fitzroy and Green Islands as well as the outer reef are popular tour destinations. The Cairns northern beaches consist of a series of tiny coves that are home to Trinity Beach, Palm Cove and Yorkeys Knob. There are several world class resort golf courses in this area. The Kuranda Scenic Railway winds through 34 kms of lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and spectacular panoramic views. Kuranda is home to the Barron Falls, the worlds largest butterfly sanctuary, the Kuranda markets and an aboriginal dance theatre. Cairns and Kuranda are also linked by a rainforest cableway that skims the rainforest canopy as it connects the escarpment with the coast. South of Cairns lies the Cassowary Coast with white-water rafting in the Tully, Barron and North Johnstone rivers. Dunk and Hinchinbrook Islands are just off-shore in Rockingham Bay. The region north of Cairns is home to ritzy Port Douglas and the Greater Daintree and Cape Tribulation national parks. This World Heritage listed area is where the Great Barrier Reef meets the rainforest. There are day trips galore from Cairns including cruises of the Daintree River.
