The Tropical North of New South Wales is an area that extends from Tweed Heads at the Queensland border south to Grafton and across the hinterland plateaus of New England in the central west. The Tweed coast is a 35 km-long strip of golden beaches, grassy headlands and quaint villages. It extends from the mouth of the Tweed River south to Wooyung. Inland from the coast lies the fertile floodplain and sugar cane fields of the Tweed Valley. This important destination has some excellent holiday resorts and a mix of excellent surf beaches and quiet coves for children. Activities involve watching whale migrations from Cape Byron Lighthouse, water sports for every taste, fresh water, estuary and sports fishing, boating, cruising and sailing. This is a great region for self drive tours in a rental campervan. Take in the rainforests and lookouts in World Heritage listed National Parks, Victorian homes and jacarandas in Grafton and market stalls at Nimbin. For a change of pace, head inland from the coast into the plateaus of New England to visit the country music centre of Tamworth. Head west through the cotton fields of Narrabri and the surrounding tablelands, lush pastures, forests and national parks. New England is an area of farm stays, 4WD treks, trout fishing, gem fossicking, spa baths, hiking and bushwalking and country music.
