The Southern Highlands encompass an area south-west from Sydney where small towns and quaint villages extend to the high country of the Kosciusko National Park and the Victorian border. This is a region of lush countryside, guest houses, historic sites, restaurants, magnificent gardens, antiques, arts and crafts, lakes and waterfalls, forests and bushwalks. The Snowy Mountains, which overlap into neighbouring Victoria, are Australia's winter playground and have an established skiing industry. At other times of the year, the area gives way to angling, bushwalking, wildflowers and the wide outdoors. Goulburn is the major town of this region, a prosperous centre servicing the surrounding sheep and grazing districts. The region is famous for its fine merino wool and visitors are unlikely to miss the Big Merino. Jindabyne and Thredbo are towns usually associated with winter ski resorts and can be reached via the Alpine Way. Thredbo is the better known resort but there are several others at Perisher Blue, Charlotte Pass and Mt Selwyn.
