The New South Wales far west is the big country with huge horizons and great night skies. It is a vast area that extends from the Queensland and South Australia borders down to the Riverina area in the south. This is a sparsely populated, diverse region with only a few towns dotting the landscape that features harsh, hot semi-desert in the north and west and lakes and rivers in the south west. Visitors to the far west can involve themselves in outback tours, self drive 4WD safaris, camel riding, visits to historic sites, freshwater fishing, wildlife, houseboat cruises on the Murray River, trekking national parks and Aboriginal art and engravings. Broken Hill is the major town of the region and is dominated by the silver, lead and zinc mine which was the birthplace of BHP/Billiton, the global mining giant. The town is a major centre for artists drawn by the harsh landscapes and environment. Bourke boasts several historic buildings on Mitchell Street that date to the time when the town was a thriving Darling River wool port. Lightning Ridge in the far north of the state is an opal mining centre noted for its black opals, unique underground dwellings and showrooms.
